Former Lagos State House of Assembly lawmaker, Desmond Elliot, has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that the Nigerian leader remains driven by a desire to leave a lasting legacy rather than personal ambition.
Speaking during an interview on The Morayo Afolabi-Brown Show on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Elliot said he remains unconvinced that any opposition figure has yet emerged with the political strength to unseat Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Reflecting on the country’s political landscape, the former Surulere Constituency I representative said his support for the president is partly influenced by his belief that Tinubu is conscious of the historical judgment that awaits political leaders.
According to Elliot, the president understands that his time in public life is limited and is therefore likely to focus on building a legacy that will outlive his administration.
“No matter how we try to bring him down, this is a man who knows he doesn’t have more than forty years left, whether we like it or not,” Elliot said.
The former lawmaker argued that leaders approaching the latter stages of their careers often become more concerned about how history will remember them than about accumulating political power.
Drawing a comparison with late former Lagos State Governor Lateef Jakande, Elliot noted that decades after leaving office, Jakande continues to be remembered for his developmental projects and governance record despite serving only a single term.
He suggested that Tinubu may be motivated by a similar desire to secure a positive place in Nigeria’s political history.
The actor-turned-politician maintained that enduring public recognition is earned through tangible achievements rather than political rhetoric, stressing that leaders are ultimately remembered for the impact they make on the lives of ordinary citizens.
Elliot’s remarks come amid growing political discussions over the 2027 elections, with opposition parties seeking to build momentum against the ruling All Progressives Congress administration.
The former legislator represented Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly after first being elected in the 2015 general elections and served for eight years before leaving the Assembly. During the interview, he emphasized that public service should be measured by legacy, impact and service to the people rather than personal enrichment.
Favor As Higher Power?
(The hidden truth)
Some positions in life cannot be held or retained for long if you are not favored. Favor is higher power. You are not the only one desiring, deserving, connected, powerful or qualified. Some positions in life, opportunities, success, achievements, triumphs, selection, approvals, power and position, elevation, patronage, etc, are mainly through favor. Favor is silent, spiritual and higher power. For spiritual guidance, other solutions, call/Whatsapp Dr J.A. Faros on 07030514063. With God, all are possible.
