Former Israeli government spokesperson Eylon Levy has underscored the fundamental impasse between Israel and Iran, contrasting the current hostilities with Israel’s history of diplomatic breakthroughs with former Arab adversaries.
Speaking on Silverbird N24 from 3:12 Candid Chat, on the nature of regional peace, Levy argued that while Israel has proven its willingness to make significant sacrifices for stability, the ideological stance of the current leadership in Tehran presents a unique, existential challenge that cannot be resolved through traditional diplomacy. Levy pointed to Israel’s landmark peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan as evidence that the Jewish state is capable of transitioning from a state of war to a state of cooperation with neighboring nations. These agreements, he noted, were not without cost.
“Of course, Israel has in the past made peace with Egypt, with Jordan, which used to be enemy states, and Israel made painful concessions in order to reach peace,” Levy stated.
Historically, these concessions have included territorial withdrawals and complex security arrangements, which were undertaken in exchange for recognized borders and diplomatic normalization.
Despite these historical successes, Levy contended that the same logic cannot be applied to the Islamic Republic of Iran under its current regime.
He framed the conflict not as a dispute over borders or resources, but as a struggle for survival against an adversary that rejects Israel’s right to exist.
“The problem is that the Iranian regime is sworn to death to Israel, and we’d quite like to live,” Levy remarked.
