Lawyer Liborous Oshoma has revealed that an accused person in a banditry financing case once alleged that a former governor of Zamfara State regularly provided money that was delivered to bandits.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television while discussing the proposed creation of state police, Oshoma said he handled the matter at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the suspect reportedly submitted an affidavit claiming he acted as a liaison between the governor and bandits. According to Oshoma, the accused alleged that he received money from the governor every month to pass on to the criminal groups.

The lawyer cited the case while expressing concerns over proposals to establish state police across Nigeria. He argued that lawmakers must ensure adequate safeguards are put in place to prevent governors from having unchecked control over state security outfits.

Oshoma warned that a state police system controlled entirely by a governor through appointments, funding, promotions, and disciplinary measures could be open to abuse. He questioned how such a police force could operate independently if a governor was accused of maintaining links with criminal elements.

According to him, creating state police without strong legal protections would mean repeating mistakes already seen in other government institutions where power is concentrated in the hands of a few individuals.

In his words, “I’ve handled a matter at the Federal High Court in Abuja where the suspect, who was alleged to be financing banditry pointed accusing fingers at the former governor of Zamfara, deposed an affidavit to that effect, to the fact that he was a liaison between the Bandits and the governor. That infact, the governor used to give him money to go give Bandits every month.”
