BREAKING: Supreme Court Ruling Sinks Turaki Faction, Voids Controversial PDP Convention

According to Vanguard’s report of April 30, 2026, Nigeria’s Supreme Court has set aside the Peoples Democratic Party’s national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025, effectively nullifying the factional leadership that emerged under Tanimu Turaki. The judgment brings an end to a protracted legal dispute over the legitimacy of the convention, which had been challenged for allegedly violating court orders and the party’s internal rules.
The gathering had proceeded despite a prior injunction from a Federal High Court barring it, on the grounds of constitutional breaches and unresolved controversies from state congresses, including the alleged exclusion of some aspirants. The Court of Appeal later upheld that decision, prompting the Turaki faction to seek redress at the Supreme Court.
In its final ruling, however, the apex court agreed with the lower courts, holding that the convention was conducted in violation of subsisting judicial orders and that its outcomes could not stand. Consequently, all executives produced from the disputed convention have been invalidated.
