According to a report by GiveMeSport on Thursday May 28, 2026, Manchester United are reportedly accelerating their summer transfer plans, with multiple midfield targets under consideration as the club prepares a major rebuild under their new permanent manager ahead of the upcoming season.

The club are believed to have already identified Atalanta midfielder Ederson as their first signing of the window, with negotiations at an advanced stage and a fee of just under €45 million close to being agreed between both clubs.

Personal terms are already in place on a five-year contract, meaning only final club-to-club details remain before the deal is completed, with United hoping to wrap things up quickly before international tournaments increase player valuations.

Reports also suggest that United officials recently travelled to Italy to finalise discussions, where they held multiple meetings not only regarding Ederson but also wider transfer matters involving other midfield targets on their shortlist.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has indicated that during the trip, United also explored conversations involving representatives of Sandro Tonali, who remains a long-term target despite concerns over his potential transfer fee and wage demands.

Tonali, currently at Newcastle United, is still being monitored closely, with some reports claiming United could still pursue him depending on how other midfield negotiations develop during the window.

Another major target being considered is Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, although his valuation of around £100 million has led United to reassess their approach to strengthening the middle of the pitch this summer.

There is also speculation that United could shift their strategy entirely, prioritising a combination of Ederson and Tonali instead of Anderson, with internal planning suggesting a total midfield investment of around £140–150 million for the window.
