BREAKING: NDC Emerges As Leading Opposition Party In Edo Assembly After Defections Of APC, PDP Lawmakers

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged as the leading opposition party in the Edo State House of Assembly after three lawmakers reportedly moved from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join its ranks.
The development was brought before the Assembly through an official letter from the Edo State Chairman of the NDC, Engr. Babatunde Olukoga, addressed to the Speaker of the House, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku.
In the letter, Olukoga requested that the Assembly formally acknowledge the new members of the party.
The lawmakers involved in the move are Hon. Charity Iguodala Aiguobarhueghian, representing Ovia North-East I Constituency; Hon. Natasha Osawaru, who represents Egor Constituency; and Hon. Omosigho Uyi Frank, representing Oredo East Constituency.
With their defection, the NDC now has a stronger presence in the Assembly and has claimed the position of the major opposition party in the House.
The party also proposed a new leadership arrangement for its minority caucus, nominating Natasha Osawaru as Minority Leader and Omosigho Uyi Frank as Minority Whip.
The proposed changes, however, met resistance from the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Hon. Jonathan Ibhamawu.
He argued that the lawmakers had not followed the proper constitutional process required for changing political parties.
Ibhamawu stated that the affected legislators must first openly announce their defection during a plenary session before the Assembly can formally recognize their new political affiliation.
In response to the disagreement, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku declined to take immediate action on the request.
He explained that the matter would remain on hold until all necessary legislative procedures were completed.
The Speaker assured members that the Assembly would return to the issue once the required steps had been fulfilled.
