BREAKING NEWS: SDP Insists On May 9 Convention, Rejects INEC Position

In a recent news on Punch Newspaper, The Social Democratic Party has reiterated its decision to hold its national convention on May 9 in Bauchi State despite ongoing leadership disputes and disagreement with the Independent National Electoral Commission over party recognition. The party said it remains focused on internal preparations for the 2027 general elections and will not be distracted by external controversies. The party also emphasized commitment to democratic principles and assured members nationwide of full participation in upcoming congresses and convention processes.

Chairman Prof Sadiq Gombe announced the date in Abuja, stating that the National Working Committee has been preparing for congresses nationwide and that the party is committed to its electoral timetable ahead of 2027. He said SDP will continue resolving internal issues through constitutional means. It added that the SDP remains one of the few opposition parties actively resolving disputes internally in line with electoral laws and its constitution.

Agunloye faulted INEC’s recognition of a rival leadership, arguing that the commission has no constitutional authority to determine party leadership, insisting such matters are internal and governed by party constitutions and national laws.

The controversy follows INEC’s portal update listing the disputed chairman as party leader after a Court of Appeal judgment, prompting objections from SDP which described the action as unconstitutional and premature.

The leadership dispute stems from internal suspensions and competing claims of legitimacy, with stakeholders awaiting judicial clarification on the final status of the party leadership ahead of key electoral activities.

The SDP has reaffirmed its commitment to proceed with its convention, insisting it remains a united platform focused on internal democracy and preparation for the 2027 elections despite legal and political challenges. The party further called on members to remain united and focused as it prepares for the forthcoming electoral cycle and national convention activities. Party insists convention remains valid and binding process.
