The US Senate has approved a measure calling on President Donald Trump to stop military action in Iran or seek approval from Congress before continuing further operations, according to the BBC.
The measure passed in a 50–48 vote, with some Republican senators joining Democrats in opposing the ongoing conflict.
The vote shows growing disagreement among lawmakers over the administration’s approach to the war, according to the BBC.
The US House of Representatives had earlier approved the same measure in June, with some Republicans also supporting it.
However, the resolution is mainly symbolic because it does not require Trump’s approval and has no direct legal force, according to the BBC.
Although the measure cannot immediately stop military action, it could increase pressure on the White House as criticism of the conflict grows.
Concerns over rising fuel prices and public opposition have added to calls for a change in policy, according to the BBC.
The decision is considered significant because it marks the first time both chambers of Congress have approved a resolution asking a president to end a military action since the War Powers Resolution of 1973 was introduced, according to the BBC.
A White House official said the situation has changed following a ceasefire agreement reached on 7 April, adding that there are currently no active hostilities requiring US forces to withdraw, according to the BBC.
The official also said the vote succeeded partly because two Republican senators, including Mitch McConnell, were absent during the proceedings, according to the BBC.
The US and Iran have agreed to maintain a ceasefire while working towards ending hostilities under an agreement signed by the leaders of both countries, according to the BBC.
The vote has also revealed divisions within Trump’s Republican Party, with Republican senators Rand Paul, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins and Bill Cassidy joining Democrats in supporting the resolution, according to the BBC.
US law requires congressional approval for military operations lasting beyond 60 days. However, the Trump administration argues that the ceasefire changed the timeline for the conflict, according to the BBC.
Favor As Higher Power?
(The hidden truth)
Some positions in life cannot be held or retained for long if you are not favored. Favor is higher power. You are not the only one desiring, deserving, connected, powerful or qualified. Some positions in life, opportunities, success, achievements, triumphs, selection, approvals, power and position, elevation, patronage, etc, are mainly through favor.
