Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has generated widespread reactions on social media following his comments on the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.

The incident, which has drawn national attention, reportedly occurred in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, where armed bandits allegedly kidnapped several pupils and members of staff. The development has reignited concerns about the security situation in parts of the country and the safety of educational institutions.

In response to the attack, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards for Oyo State as part of efforts to strengthen security and combat criminal activities within forested areas often used as hideouts by armed groups. The President also directed the deployment of a specialized rescue team to facilitate efforts aimed at securing the release of the abducted victims and restoring confidence among residents.

The federal government’s response was widely reported and has become a major topic of discussion among political leaders, security experts, and members of the public. However, beyond the government’s immediate actions, Peter Obi used the occasion to draw attention to what he described as the need for leaders to prioritize the welfare and security of citizens over political calculations.

Reacting through his official X account, the former governor strongly condemned the abduction and expressed concern over what he believes is an increasing tendency among political actors to focus on electoral ambitions while pressing national challenges continue to affect ordinary Nigerians.

According to Peter Obi:”Meanwhile, amid all these tragic developments, we politicians remain consumed by the next election, paying far more attention to political ambitions than to the safety and well-being of our children and fellow citizens”.
