According to a report by DAILY POST on Friday 26th June 2026, Paul Ibe, media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has urged opposition leaders to join forces ahead of the 2027 general elections following a Federal High Court ruling that nullified the earlier judgment ordering the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party.
In a post shared on X on Friday, Ibe described the court’s decision as a serious warning to opposition parties, claiming it showed that they could no longer afford to remain divided.
He accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of attempting to weaken opposition forces and move Nigeria toward a one-party political system; According to him, the latest development underscores the need for major opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, to work together if they hope to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Ibe maintained that the country’s democracy could face greater risks if opposition parties fail to unite, stressing that there is still enough time to build a formidable coalition before the next general election.
His remarks came after Justice Isah Dashen of the Federal High Court in Lokoja set aside the court’s earlier ruling that directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC.
The judge ruled that the previous judgment was reached without the inclusion of the Peace Movement Party (PMP), which claimed ownership of the logo adopted by the NDC.
Counsel to the PMP, C.S. Ekeocha, said the ruling returned all parties to their positions before the December 10, 2025 judgment and ordered that all affected parties be joined in the case before fresh proceedings begin.
He added that all actions taken by INEC based on the earlier judgment, including the recognition and registration of the NDC, have been suspended until the court reaches a final decision on the matter.
