Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticized comments made by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, after she encouraged economically disadvantaged Nigerians to consider starting small businesses such as selling akara, roasted corn and kulikuli.
Reacting on X, Sowore dismissed the advice, saying the government had never shown strong ideas for addressing the country’s economic challenges. He argued that it would be wrong to accuse the administration of running out of ideas because, in his view, it never had meaningful solutions to begin with.
The First Lady made the remarks while hosting the wives of the 36 state governors in Abuja. She explained that small businesses require little capital to start and said her office provides grants, not loans, to help vulnerable Nigerians establish such ventures without the burden of repayment.
She also highlighted several interventions carried out through her office, including financial support for tuberculosis treatment, breast cancer care, food nutrition, agriculture, education, social investment, scholarships and digital skills training in partnership with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
Mrs. Tinubu urged Nigerians not to lose hope despite the country’s economic difficulties, saying her initiatives are designed to complement the Federal Government’s efforts to improve livelihoods and create more opportunities for citizens.
