Professor Udenta Udenta has shared his thoughts on Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, saying the southern region of the country will play a decisive role in determining the eventual winner.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Friday, June 26, 2026, the former National Secretary of the defunct Alliance for Democracy said political competition in the South is expected to intensify as leading presidential hopefuls seek to consolidate support ahead of the next general election.

According to Udenta, the region is likely to emerge as the key battleground between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. He argued that both politicians enjoy significant political influence in different parts of the South, making the region crucial to the outcome of the presidential contest.

“The South is going to be a battleground between the President and Peter Obi, with no doubt whatsoever,” Udenta said.

He explained that Nigeria’s constitutional requirements for electing a president make it necessary for candidates to secure broad national support rather than relying on a single region or ethnic base.

“You need geographical spread. You need votes across the country, and that is why every serious presidential candidate must build bridges beyond his traditional support base,” he stated.

According to the political analyst, the South’s voting pattern could significantly shape the final outcome of the election because of its electoral strength and strategic importance within Nigeria’s political landscape.

Udenta noted that while political parties would continue to campaign nationwide, special attention would likely be given to the southern states because of the intense competition expected there.

“The battle for the South will be fierce because both sides understand its strategic importance. That is where one of the biggest contests of the election will take place,” he added.

He further argued that presidential candidates must invest heavily in grassroots mobilization, coalition-building, and voter engagement if they hope to satisfy the constitutional requirements needed to emerge victorious.

According to him, elections in Nigeria are no longer determined solely by popularity in one region, but by a candidate’s ability to secure acceptance across multiple geopolitical zones.

“You cannot ignore any part of the country and expect to win the presidency. Every region matters, and every serious contender must build a truly national campaign,” Udenta said.

The former Alliance for Democracy official also observed that shifting political alliances and ongoing consultations among political leaders could reshape the electoral landscape before the 2027 polls.

He maintained that coalition-building would remain one of the defining features of the coming election, as parties and candidates seek to broaden their appeal across the country.

“Politics is dynamic. Alliances will change, new calculations will emerge, but the constitutional requirements will remain the same. Every candidate must prepare for that reality,” he stated.
