According to a report by PUNCH on 26th June 2026, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has challenged President Bola Tinubu to a live debate on their plans for Nigeria.
Obi stated that he wants candidates to openly discuss their visions for the country, arguing that such a debate would promote transparency and help Nigerians make informed decisions. He added that it would contribute to building a better Nigeria and encourage accountable leadership.
He said, “I challenge any of those contesting to a debate to say what they want to do for this country, including President Bola Tinubu.”
Obi also alleged that forces within the Federal Government are working to prevent him from contesting the 2027 presidential election. According to him, efforts are being made to stop his name from appearing on the ballot.
Despite the alleged obstacles, Obi said he remains undeterred and committed to his political mission. He maintained that no amount of intimidation would stop him from pursuing his goal.
Speaking during a leadership programme at Madonna University, Obi said his ambition is driven by a genuine desire to improve Nigeria rather than personal interest. He urged young Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) and vote for competent and credible candidates.
He also addressed the country’s security challenges, promising to tackle insecurity and reduce criminality if given the opportunity to lead. He argued that many of Nigeria’s problems stem from poor leadership and forces that resist meaningful progress.
Obi also reacted to a recent court judgment concerning the registration of the NDC as a political party. He said the ruling would not discourage him or his supporters, insisting that the struggle for democracy would continue.
He called on Nigerians to remain peaceful and resist any attempt to undermine the country’s democratic process, stressing that the will of the people must always prevail.
