Nollywood star and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has come under fire from party chairman Ladipo Johnson for remarks he made recently about the opposition coalition’s leadership and internal democratic processes.

These comments were made by Johnson in an interview that was broadcast on Friday, June 26, 2026, on the official Channels Television YouTube channel. The interview was about the newly formed political movement’s internal disputes.

In response to Okonkwo’s comments, Johnson told the actor his claims weren’t true and that it was wrong to blame Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, for not getting the nomination.

Johnson stated that “I think Kenneth Okonkwo’s actions are almost like cheap blackmail because Peter Obi had nothing to do with your getting a nomination since he was after his own ambition.”

The nomination process, he insisted, was transparent and fair, with all candidates given fair chances to run for party tickets without leadership meddling.

Johnson clarified that it was unfair for politicians who did not go past the primaries to pin their electoral defeats on prominent coalition members. He asserts that party members and delegates, rather than any one person, dictated the procedure.

The NDC leader went on to say that the primaries’ results proved there was no favouritism of any candidates. He brought up the fact that despite their political links, a number of prominent coalition members—including those thought to be close friends of prominent figures—were unable to gain nominations.

Johnson claimed that this proved that, contrary to what some disgruntled members had claimed, the selection process was not controlled by Peter Obi or any other significant leader.

During the nomination stage, he emphasised that Obi was busy pursuing his own political ambitions and had nothing to do with choosing the coalition’s other candidates.

Disagreements about the coalition’s internal structure, leadership arrangements, and candidate selection procedure have led to mounting public discussions among opposition movement members, which Johnson has echoed.

Concerns regarding internal democracy, transparency, and the coalition’s trajectory have been voiced by Kenneth Okonkwo, who is among the outspoken opponents of events within the opposition alliance. Supporters and political analysts alike have reacted strongly to his comments, with varying viewpoints on the topics he brought up.

On the other hand, Johnson was certain that accusations levelled against party leaders should not stem from individual disappointment. He stressed the need of members concentrating on fortifying the coalition rather than getting involved in public disagreements, and he said that accepting the results of a democratic process is a crucial part of being politically active.

Plus, he cautioned that the opposition’s credibility may take a hit if it faced ongoing internal attacks, which would divert focus away from its larger political goals in the run-up to the next elections.

Favor As Higher Power?

(The hidden truth)

Some positions in life cannot be held or retained for long if you are not favored. Favor is higher power. You are not the only one desiring, deserving, connected, powerful or qualified. Some positions in life, opportunities, success, achievements, triumphs, selection, approvals, power and position, elevation, patronage, etc, are mainly through favor.
