According to a report by The Punch on Friday, June 26, 2026, a media aide to former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Paul Ibe, has urged opposition leaders, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, to unite ahead of the 2027 general election.
His call followed a Federal High Court ruling that nullified the earlier recognition of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Reacting to the judgment delivered on Friday by the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, Ibe described the decision as a major signal to opposition parties, warning that they could face increasing political pressure if they fail to work together.
In a post on X, he alleged that President Bola Tinubu was determined to weaken opposition parties and establish what he described as “a de facto one-party state.”
“The decision of the Federal High Court Lokoja should be a wake-up call that there is no hiding place for the opposition,” Ibe wrote, adding that the President’s message was “loud and clear.”
He further argued that opposition figures still have enough time to build a united front before the next presidential election.
According to him, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and other opposition leaders should harmonise their political strengths if they hope to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
The comments followed a ruling by Justice Isah Dashen, who set aside the court’s earlier judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission to register the NDC.
The court held that the previous judgment affected the rights of the Peace Movement Party, which claimed ownership of the logo adopted by the NDC but was not joined in the original suit.
Counsel to the PMP, C.S. Ekeocha, said the ruling restored all parties to their previous positions and ordered that the case be heard afresh after all necessary parties are joined.
He added that INEC’s recognition and registration of the NDC have been reversed pending the final determination of the case.
