According to a report by The Punch on Thursday, May 21, 2026, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara reportedly stepped away from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary race in what observers see as an attempt to ease political tensions and preserve unity within the party ahead of future electoral activities.

Fubara announced his decision on Wednesday night, describing it as a painful choice made in the interest of peace and stability in Rivers State. He reportedly stated that protecting the state’s progress mattered more than personal political ambition and urged his followers to maintain calm and avoid actions capable of deepening divisions.

The governor’s withdrawal comes after a prolonged political struggle involving camps loyal to him and supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. For nearly three years, both political groups have remained engaged in a fierce battle over influence and control of political structures in Rivers State.

Recent developments within the APC also appeared to shape events leading up to the decision. Reports indicated that more than 30 legislative aspirants linked to Fubara’s political camp were disqualified, a move that significantly changed the political landscape within the party.

Following those developments, Wike’s ally, Kingsley Chinda, reportedly emerged as the sole major contender in the governorship contest after other leading figures stepped aside. The withdrawal of another key political figure, Tonye Cole, further reduced competition and strengthened the possibility of an uncontested path.

Political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections is not limited to Rivers State. Across different parts of the country, several states are experiencing negotiations, disagreements, and internal contests as parties seek to shape their future leadership.

In Kwara State, a number of aspirants have opposed consensus arrangements supporting Yahaya Seriki. Plateau State has also witnessed resistance, with retired military officer Yilcini Bida rejecting claims that he withdrew from the race.

Elsewhere, Adamawa and Oyo states continue to experience competitive political contests involving multiple aspirants. The APC national leadership has maintained that direct primary elections will proceed in states where consensus efforts do not succeed.

Favor As Higher Power?

(The hidden truth)

Some positions in life cannot be held or retained for long if you are not favored. Favor is higher power. You are not the only one desiring, deserving, connected, powerful or qualified. Some positions in life, opportunities, success, achievements, triumphs, selection, approvals, power and position, elevation, patronage, etc, are mainly through favor.
