According to a report by Punch on Monday, June 1, 2026, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has defended his criticism of the African Democratic Congress presidential primary, saying his knowledge of the party’s key figures made it easy for him to predict the outcome of the contest.
Speaking during a media chat in Abuja, Wike said the composition of the ADC leadership convinced him that the process was structured to favour former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He maintained that the presence of former Senate President David Mark in a leading role signalled that the race would not provide equal opportunities for all aspirants.
According to the minister, his familiarity with the major actors involved enabled him to see through the political arrangement. He stated, “You cannot set a trap for me. We know ourselves as politicians.” Wike argued that the structure of the party did not inspire confidence in transparency or the conduct of a free and fair primary election.
The minister also expressed sympathy for former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, describing him as a political associate who failed to recognise the realities of the contest. Wike said Amaechi was influenced by widespread criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and entered the race without fully assessing the political environment.
His comments came after Amaechi rejected the outcome of the ADC primary, alleging that the process lacked transparency and that some members were prevented from voting. Despite the complaints, the party declared Atiku its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, while efforts have since been initiated to reconcile aggrieved members and strengthen unity within the party.
