In a recent interview shared by the official YouTube channel of Arise TV on Saturday, May 9, 2026, international human rights lawyer Kola Alapinni expressed skepticism over the possibility of consensus among leading opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, “I don’t see how he’s going to bury his ego and allow someone else to be president.” The remark underscores concerns about the willingness of key contenders to lay down their ambitions for the sake of a broader political alliance.

Speaking during a live segment on the station’s Daybreak programme, Alapinni examined the growing tension within opposition ranks, particularly among prominent politicians with longstanding presidential ambitions. He noted that while coalition efforts are ongoing, personal interests and political legacies may complicate any attempt at unity.

Alapinni explained that such challenges are not new in Nigeria’s political space, where strong personalities often struggle to reach compromise, even when collective success depends on it. He warned that failure to manage these competing interests could weaken opposition efforts to mount a formidable challenge against the ruling party.

As the 2027 elections approach, analysts say the ability of opposition leaders to prioritize unity over individual ambition will be critical in determining their chances at the polls.
