The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Tijani Fatai, has announced the arrest of 34 foreign nationals found occupying a building on Lagos Island without immigration documentation or a clear explanation of their activities in Nigeria.
Speaking during a media briefing covered by Channels TV, CP Fatai said operatives moved in after receiving intelligence about the building. “In a particular house on the island, we received information that there were a lot of foreign nationals occupying that particular building. We went into action there.
We’ve arrested 14 Chadians, nine Burkinabes, four Beninese, four Malians, two Togolese, and one Ghanaian. What is significant is that none of those arrested could give a satisfactory account of themselves, what they were doing in Nigeria,” he said.
Fatai noted that 12 of the suspects carried ECOWAS passports but still failed to provide credible explanations for their presence in the country.
He revealed that when they were asked what they do for a living, all they said was that they are “into networking,” without any further clarification.
He said the police are currently profiling all 34 suspects to determine whether any of them are linked to criminal activity, after which they will be handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for proper processing.
