Primate Elijah Ayodele has claimed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is not supporting Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 election, warning that any reliance on him could lead to failure.
The INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church leader made the statement while commenting on the evolving political alignments in Nigeria, particularly within the opposition space. According to Ayodele, Obasanjo’s political influence is currently tilted towards Peter Obi rather than Atiku.
“Obasanjo is not with Atiku; if he relies on him, he will fail,” Ayodele said. “Obasanjo is with Obi.”
Ayodele’s remarks come amid significant shifts in the political landscape. Atiku and Obi were both previously associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), but recent developments have seen Obi move on to align with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), while Atiku remains a key figure within the ADC.
The cleric suggested that endorsements and political backing from influential figures like Obasanjo could play a crucial role in shaping the outcome of the 2027 election. However, he warned that misreading such alliances could be costly for candidates.
According to Ayodele, Atiku faces a difficult path if he continues to depend on perceived support that may not exist. He argued that political success in Nigeria requires a clear and reliable base of support, rather than assumptions about alliances.
Ayodele also hinted that Obi’s growing political connections could strengthen his position ahead of the election, particularly if he continues to attract influential backing. The former Anambra State governor has remained a prominent figure in opposition politics, and his recent move to a new political platform has further intensified discussions about his prospects.
