According to a report by Daily Trust on Thursday, June 4, 2026, Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has stated that backing former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election would inadvertently strengthen President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term in office.

He argued that the opposition must carefully consider its strategy ahead of the next general election if it intends to mount a serious challenge against the incumbent administration.

Speaking during an interview, Okonkwo stressed that opposition parties cannot afford to remain divided if they hope to defeat Tinubu at the polls.

According to him, the various opposition groups and political stakeholders must rally around a single platform and present a united front.

He maintained that fragmentation within the opposition would only benefit the ruling party and increase the likelihood of Tinubu retaining power beyond his current tenure.

The former spokesman of the Labour Party emphasized that unity remains the most critical factor for any opposition movement seeking political success in 2027.

He noted that a coordinated effort among opposition figures would provide a stronger alternative for voters and improve the chances of producing a candidate capable of competing effectively against the president.

Okonkwo also criticized Obi’s reported decision to withdraw from coalition discussions being held within the ADC.

He suggested that the move was a setback to ongoing efforts aimed at building a broad-based political alliance ahead of the next election cycle.

According to him, such coalition arrangements are essential if opposition parties are to maximize their electoral strength and avoid repeating past mistakes.

He further alleged that Obi was unwilling to subject himself to a competitive primary election process.

Okonkwo argued that any politician seeking the support of a coalition should be prepared to participate in an open and transparent contest for the party’s ticket.

He maintained that internal democratic processes are necessary to ensure fairness and to select the most suitable candidate to represent the opposition.

The ADC chieftain reiterated that no individual should expect automatic endorsement without going through established procedures.

He said that political alliances require compromise and collective decision-making, adding that all aspirants should be willing to test their popularity through a credible primary election.

He expressed the view that adherence to these principles would strengthen the opposition and enhance its prospects in future elections.

He said, “Nobody forced Peter Obi to enter ADC. He entered on his own, and one week to the end of the closure of the time, he left and gave the reason.”
