BREAKING: 2027: Governor Makinde Moves to Take Over PDP Structure as Turaki Emerges Caretaker Chairman
According to a report by The Punch on Monday, May 4, 2026, the internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic turn as the faction loyal to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, moves to unveil a 10-member caretaker committee.
Led by Tanimu Turaki (SAN), the committee is expected to be formally announced today, Monday, following a high-stakes meeting of the Adolphus Wabara-led Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja.
This development follows a chaotic legal battle. On April 30, the Supreme Court invalidated a previous Makinde-backed convention in Ibadan, citing a breach of judicial orders.
However, the Wabara faction insists that the ruling actually stripped the rival pro-Wike leadership of authority.
Senator Wabara declared that the party would not surrender to “political brigands,” asserting that the BoT has constitutionally stepped in to stabilize the PDP.
Adding fuel to the fire, sources indicate that Governor Makinde is set to officially declare his 2027 presidential ambition later this week. Supporters claim Makinde is the only viable leader left to steer the party toward the next general election.
The rival faction, aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, has dismissed the BoT’s move as a “nullity.”
Their spokesperson, Jungudo Mohammed, urged party members to ignore the “illegalities,” maintaining that there is no leadership vacuum in the party.
As both sides dig in, the 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for today will likely decide the party’s fate.
With INEC reportedly notified and the BoT claiming a two-thirds majority, the battle for the soul of Nigeria’s main opposition party has reached a fever pitch.
