According to a report by Afia News, on Thursday, 4 June, 2026, a candidate of the Accord Party for the Enugu North State Constituency seat, Oarhe Ohis Kelvin, has dismissed concerns about his ethnic background, declaring that he is deeply connected to Enugu and the Igbo culture despite not being of Igbo origin.
Speaking during an interview on Afia News, Kelvin said his upbringing and long-standing relationship with the people of Enugu have made him an integral part of the state, arguing that identity should not be defined solely by ethnicity.
The Accord Party candidate made the remarks while responding to questions surrounding his eligibility and acceptance among voters in the constituency. According to him, his connection to Enugu runs deeper than many people realize.
“I think I’m more Igbo, more Enugu than anybody in Enugu. In fact, my nickname is ‘Ohis-chukwu,’” Kelvin said.
The lawmaker hopeful maintained that he has spent a significant part of his life among the people of Enugu, learning their language, culture and traditions. He argued that his commitment to the development of the constituency should be judged by his service and vision rather than by where his ancestors originated from.
Kelvin’s comments have drawn attention as conversations about identity, inclusion and representation continue to feature prominently in political discussions across the country. His candidacy is seen by some observers as a test of how voters balance ethnic considerations with competence and performance in electoral contests.
