Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has suggested that the ruling All Progressives Congress could face serious political challenges ahead of the 2027 presidential election if it makes a major mistake.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Baba-Ahmed argued that the party’s political strength could quickly weaken if key decisions are not properly handled. He pointed to the fact that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not yet officially announced a running mate for the next presidential election.
The former senator also questioned the idea of individuals aggressively seeking the vice-presidential position. According to him, it is uncommon in Nigeria’s political history for a prospective vice-presidential candidate to openly campaign or lobby extensively for the role.
Baba-Ahmed cited several former leaders and political figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Goodluck Jonathan, and Yemi Osinbajo, saying they did not publicly lobby for the position before they were selected.
He maintained that the APC’s future political fortunes could depend on how it manages sensitive decisions ahead of the election cycle. Baba-Ahmed warned that a single major error could significantly affect the party’s chances of retaining power in 2027.
In his words, “I haven’t seen lately, where somebody kept lobbying to be a vice presidential candidate, Atiku didn’t, Namadi didn’t, Jonathan didn’t, Osinbajo didn’t. For someone to go and extensively lobby, and do those things to be Vice President.”
