According to a report by Arise News, on Tuesday May 12, 2026, former Edo State governor and current senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has strongly criticized recent amendments to the Senate Standing Rules, warning that Nigeria could slide toward dictatorship if lawmakers continue altering rules for political interests.
Speaking during an interview on on Tuesday, Oshiomhole accused the Senate leadership of rushing sensitive constitutional matters without proper debate and scrutiny.
He said the upper chamber “humiliated itself” after reversing parts of the controversial amendments following public backlash and legal concerns.
The senator argued that lawmakers must never create laws targeted at stopping certain politicians from contesting leadership positions in the National Assembly.
According to him, such actions could weaken democracy and encourage authoritarian tendencies in the country.
“You don’t make law either for yourself, or make law against specific individuals that you fear will come. That is the beginning of the road to life presidency and dictatorship,” he said.
Oshiomhole also questioned the moral justification behind the proposed eligibility rules for Senate leadership positions, insisting that leadership should depend on the confidence and support of fellow lawmakers rather than restrictive political arrangements.
The controversy has reportedly deepened tensions between Oshiomhole and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, with political observers saying the battle may already signal early power struggles ahead of the 2027 general elections.
