According to a report by The Times of Israel on Thursday May 28, 2026, the United States has reportedly launched new military strikes inside Iran, targeting a site it says was linked to threats against American forces and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
A US official speaking to Reuters said the overnight operation targeted a military installation considered a risk to both US personnel and international maritime traffic. The official also stated that several Iranian drones believed to pose similar dangers were detected and destroyed by US forces.
Shortly after the reported strikes, Iranian media said residents heard multiple explosions near the eastern area of Bandar Abbas, a major port city in southern Iran, around 1:30 a.m. local time. Reports also indicated that air defense systems were activated for several minutes while authorities began investigating the source of the blasts.
The latest incident comes as indirect diplomatic efforts continue to try to ease tensions following months of conflict that have disrupted global energy markets. The war, which began earlier in the year after initial US and Israeli attacks, has reportedly resulted in significant casualties and rising instability in the region.
Earlier statements from US President Donald Trump dismissed Iranian media claims about a proposed joint arrangement with Oman over control of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, insisting that the waterway would remain open for international navigation.
The United States had previously carried out what it described as defensive strikes earlier in the week, which Iran condemned as violations of a fragile ceasefire. Those earlier actions targeted vessels suspected of mine-laying activities and missile launch sites identified as threats by US Central Command.
