BREAKING: Fresh Legal Drama Hits Imo North as Aspirant Challenges Election Outcome

According to report by Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, an Imo North senatorial aspirant under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Isaac Nwachukwu, has approached the Federal High Court in Owerri, challenging both his party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the outcome of the party’s National Assembly primary election held in June.

In the suit filed through his lawyer, C.J. Oguzie, Nwachukwu claimed that he was originally recognised as a consensus candidate for the Imo North Senatorial District but was later denied the party’s ticket.

He alleged that the NDC replaced his name with that of another aspirant despite what he described as a valid internal selection process.

He further stated that he purchased the party’s nomination form for ₦5 million and also made an additional ₦20 million contribution to support the party’s activities, bringing the total financial commitment in question to ₦25 million.

Nwachukwu is asking the court to declare him the legitimate and duly recognised consensus candidate of the NDC for the senatorial district ahead of the 2027 general election.

He also wants an order stopping the party from presenting or substituting any other candidate in his place.

In addition, the suit seeks to restrain INEC from accepting or processing the nomination of any rival candidate for the Imo North Senate seat until the matter is resolved.

In his affidavit, the aspirant insisted that he complied with all party guidelines, participated in the screening exercise, and was duly cleared.

He also alleged that financial contributions made by aspirants were wrongly credited, claiming his ₦20 million payment was assigned to another contender, while another candidate’s funds were attributed to him.

He blamed the party’s screening committee for the alleged mix-up, naming former Governor Sam Egwu and Buba Galadima as part of the process oversight.

Nwachukwu also alleged internal political interference, claiming that party leaders questioned his political visibility and discussed concerns raised by prominent figures.

He is now urging the court to compel the NDC to restore his candidacy and issue him a formal certificate of recognition.

As of the time of filing the report, neither the NDC, INEC, nor the individuals mentioned had responded to the allegations.
