According to report by Tribune News on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Gabriel ‘Leke’ Abegunrin has warned that rising political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections could deepen divisions between the Yoruba and Igbo ethnic groups if caution is not exercised, particularly on social media platforms.
He urged Nigerians to embrace responsible communication and avoid inflammatory comments capable of worsening ethnic hostility.
The Archbishop spoke during a press conference marking the 2026 World Communications Day at the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan’s Pastoral Institute Hostel in Bodija, Ibadan.
According to him, political discussions online have increasingly shifted from constructive debates about governance to attacks based on ethnicity, creating dangerous divisions among both youths and adults.
Abegunrin lamented that social media interactions between many Yoruba and Igbo users are now dominated by insults and tribal sentiments rather than meaningful conversations about national development.
He expressed concern that such hostility is negatively influencing younger generations and threatening national unity.
He advised Nigerians to be careful with their words as the 2027 elections approach, stressing that disagreement should not lead to hatred or character destruction.
According to him, citizens have the right to support candidates of their choice, but should avoid spreading negativity or falsehoods against others.
The cleric emphasized that communication goes beyond technology and should be guided by truth, responsibility, conscience, and respect for human dignity.
He warned that careless social media posts and unverified information could damage reputations, increase social tension, and mislead the public.
Speaking on the theme, “Preserving Human Voices and Faces,” Abegunrin noted that despite advancements in artificial intelligence and digital technology, human values must remain central in communication.
He encouraged young people not to allow technology or online trends to control their emotions, identity, or moral values.
Also speaking, Anthony Ogunyale urged Nigerians to remember that communication should reflect love, humanity, and respect regardless of the platform being used.
Favor As Higher Power?
(The hidden truth)
Some positions in life cannot be held or retained for long if you are not favored. Favor is higher power. You are not the only one desiring, deserving, connected, powerful or qualified. Some positions in life, opportunities, success, achievements, triumphs, selection, approvals, power and position, elevation, patronage, etc, are mainly through favor. Favor is silent, spiritual and higher power. For spiritual guidance, other solutions, call/Whatsapp Dr J.A. Faros on 07030514063. With God, all are possible.
