According to a report by The Times Of Israel on April 29, 2026, US President Donald Trump told Axios that he has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for Washington lifting its blockade on Iran, insisting that nuclear negotiations must come first and remain unresolved at this stage.
Trump emphasized that the United States will maintain its blockade until Tehran agrees to a comprehensive nuclear deal. He argued that easing pressure now would be premature and counterproductive to Washington’s security objectives.
“They want to settle. They don’t want me to keep the blockade. I don’t want to [end the blockade] because I don’t want them to have a nuclear weapon,” he says.
He further defended the effectiveness of the current strategy, saying it is achieving results without military escalation. “The blockade is somewhat more effective than the bombing,” Trump says. “They are choking like a stuffed pig. And it is going to be worse for them. They can’t have a nuclear weapon.”
According to Trump, Iran’s economic and energy sectors are also under increasing strain, warning that its oil infrastructure could soon face severe disruptions if exports continue to be restricted. He suggested that mounting pressure would further weaken Tehran’s position in any future negotiations.
Separately, three sources familiar with the matter told the US outlet that US Central Command has drawn up contingency plans for what they described as a “short and powerful” bombing campaign aimed at compelling Iran to accept American demands. The planned strikes, according to the officials, would focus on key infrastructure targets designed to maximize strategic pressure while limiting prolonged engagement.
The developments come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with diplomacy stalled and military preparations reportedly advancing in parallel with ongoing economic restrictions and regional security concerns.
