Political commentator and former presidential spokesperson, Laolu Akande, has expressed concerns about the quality of advice President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is receiving from those around him.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, June 4, 2026, Akande argued that one of the major challenges facing the Tinubu administration is the caliber of individuals who currently occupy influential positions around the President.
According to Akande, effective leadership depends not only on the abilities of a president but also on the quality of the team that provides guidance, expertise, and strategic counsel.
He suggested that President Tinubu may not be benefiting from the level of advice required to successfully address the country’s pressing economic, security, and governance challenges.
While discussing the issue, Akande stated that the President has surrounded himself with people who may not possess the competence or capacity needed to offer sound and independent advice. He warned that such a situation could negatively affect decision-making at the highest level of government.
In his words, “One of the problems of Tinubu today is that, he has managed to surround himself with 2nd class, 3rd class kind of people, and that is a problem because he’s not getting the kind of counsel that he needs.”
Akande’s remarks have added to the ongoing national debate about the performance of the current administration and the effectiveness of the President’s inner circle.
The former presidential aide maintained that strong leadership requires access to quality counsel, emphasizing that the people closest to a leader often play a significant role in determining the success or failure of an administration.
