Member representing Kaduna North in the House of Representatives and Son of former Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Bello El-Rufai, has expressed concern over the increasing wave of kidnappings and mass abductions across Nigeria, urging authorities to move beyond public statements.
In a press statement shared on his official X account on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the lawmaker described the situation as alarming and unacceptable, stressing that the continued targeting of innocent citizens requires urgent national attention and a coordinated security response driven by intelligence gathering and proactive action.
“Enough Is Enough: The Rising Wave of Abductions Across Nigeria Requires Urgent Actions Not Media Announcements,” the statement read. El-Rufai noted that while several recent kidnapping incidents have attracted public attention, many other cases have reportedly gone unreported or received limited media coverage despite their severity.
“There are several incidents that have not made the news, even as a number of other cases have recently received public attention, including the abduction of the sister of the former Minister of Power, Mr. Adelabu, and her two children; the abduction of seven students of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State,” he stated.
“As well as attacks in Oyo State reportedly resulting in the abduction of 39 students and teachers in the Ahoro Esinele community, Oriire Local Government Area. In Borno State, 42 pupils from Mussa community in Askira Uba LGA were also reportedly abducted,” he added.
According to the lawmaker, the reported incidents alone account for more than 90 abducted persons, highlighting the scale of the security challenge facing communities across the country. “Collectively, these reported incidents amount to over 90 abducted persons, in addition to several other unreported or less publicized cases across the country,” he said.
El-Rufai emphasized that the impact of such incidents extends beyond statistics, affecting families, communities, and the broader sense of security among citizens. “Behind every number is a human life. Behind every statistic is a family in distress and a community living in fear,” he stated.
While acknowledging the efforts of Nigeria’s security agencies, the federal lawmaker argued that the persistence of kidnappings and abductions demonstrates the need for stronger intelligence coordination, improved preventive measures, and enhanced emergency response mechanisms.
“While we acknowledge and commend the efforts of our security agencies, the persistence of these attacks makes it clear that we must urgently strengthen intelligence coordination, improve proactive prevention, and enhance rapid response capacity across all levels,” he said.
He further called for immediate and sustained rescue efforts to secure the release of all victims currently being held by kidnappers and urged the government to adopt a more comprehensive national strategy to prevent future occurrences.
“I therefore call for immediate and sustained rescue operations to ensure the safe return of all abducted persons, and for a more decisive national strategy to prevent further occurrences. Nigeria cannot and must not normalize mass abductions. The time for firm, coordinated action is now,” El-Rufai stated.
The lawmaker concluded the statement with a prayer for the safety of those affected by the incidents and for the security of the nation. “May God protect our nation and bring all abducted citizens home safely.”
