Rotimi Amaechi has spoken positively about former President Goodluck Jonathan, describing him as a highly respected figure within the South-South region.
Speaking during an interview with Chude Jideonwo, Amaechi reflected on his political journey and past relationships with key national figures. Despite earlier political disagreements with Jonathan, he adopted a more cautious and respectful tone when discussing the former president.
He noted that Jonathan’s historic rise to Nigeria’s presidency continues to influence how he is regarded in the South-South, where many people hold him in high esteem because of his political achievements and symbolism.
Amaechi stated: “For us in the South-South, Goodluck Jonathan is our god for now, so I will not talk about him,” indicating that he preferred not to revisit past political disputes involving the former president.
He further explained that he would not engage in discussions that could be interpreted as criticism of Jonathan, stressing that his position is rooted in respect for the former president’s place in Nigeria’s political history.
His remarks reflect a more conciliatory tone, highlighting how political relationships and perceptions can shift over time, even among former rivals with a history of intense political competition.
