According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Thursday, June 4, 2026, Ayodele Fayose, former Governor of Ekiti State, has urged opposition candidates in the June 20 governorship election to abandon hopes of winning, asserting that Governor Biodun Oyebanji commands broad acceptance among voters and is poised to secure a second term in office.
Fayose expressed confidence that Oyebanji’s popularity across the state’s electorate makes him the frontrunner, effectively diminishing the prospects of rival parties in the upcoming contest.
Speaking about the political landscape ahead of the January 2027 presidential election, Fayose predicted a decisive victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He emphasized that the failure of opposition parties to unite constitutes a major weakness that would likely work in favor of the ruling party, allowing it to consolidate its influence and maintain power through 2031.
According to him, the disunity among opposition forces is a challenge that could significantly undermine their electoral ambitions.
Fayose shared these views on Thursday while appearing on a political programme broadcasted by several prominent radio stations operating within Ekiti State.
During the discussion, he provided his assessment of both state and national political dynamics, offering insights into how voter perceptions and party cohesion could shape the outcomes of the imminent elections.
He commended Governor Oyebanji for demonstrating humility and a strong commitment to fostering unity, particularly among political actors and leaders within the state.
Fayose highlighted the governor’s efforts to engage constructively with stakeholders, praising him for prioritizing reconciliation and collaboration at a time when political cohesion is critical.
In the same vein, he lauded former Governor Kayode Fayemi for his role in mentoring Oyebanji and ensuring that the state is effectively managed during this pivotal period.
Addressing circulating claims that he was being financially supported by the state government to weaken the opposition, Fayose dismissed the allegations.
He stated that having served as governor of Ekiti State on two separate occasions, he had no need for monetary incentives to support the current administration.
He framed his position as one rooted in principle and informed by his prior governance experience, rather than financial gain or political expediency.
Fayose further explained that his support for Oyebanji is guided by conscience and practical experience.
He insisted that his endorsement stems from an understanding of the state’s political realities and the benefits of stability, rather than personal interest.
His remarks underscored a focus on responsible political engagement, highlighting his long-standing role in Ekiti’s political environment and his commitment to the electorate.
He said: “I am a member of the PDP, and I remain so. We all knew the party we belonged to. Whether we support him or not, Oyebanji will win, and APC will be the greatest beneficiary. I have built an image in this state, and I have my cult-like supporters. They should all vote for this governor.”
