According to ABC, President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the U.S. military has taken custody of a sanctioned Iranian-flagged cargo ship after it attempted to bypass the ongoing American naval blockade in the Gulf of Oman region near the Strait of Hormuz.
In a social media post and subsequent remarks, Trump stated that U.S. Navy forces struck the vessel, identified in reports as the Touska or a similar Iranian cargo ship sanctioned since 2019 for its links to Tehran’s regime.
U.S. Marines then boarded the ship, securing full custody and beginning an inspection of its cargo.
“We have full custody of the ship, and are seeing what’s on board,” Trump said, according to multiple outlets covering the development.
The incident marks a significant escalation in the U.S. enforcement of the blockade imposed on Iranian ports and linked vessels following the collapse of recent peace talks.
The operation aims to prevent Iran from exporting oil, importing weapons components, or conducting other sanctioned trade that could sustain its efforts amid the broader Middle East conflict.
Trump has framed the blockade as essential to pressuring Tehran into a comprehensive deal addressing its nuclear program, regional proxy activities, and safe passage through the critical Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Central Command and military leaders, including Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine, have expanded operations globally to interdict Iran-linked ships, with boarding parties prepared for vessels attempting to evade restrictions.
Iran has condemned the move, warning of a “forceful response” and previously declaring the strait temporarily closed in retaliation.
No immediate casualties were reported in the boarding action, but the event heightens tensions as the U.S. maintains a robust naval presence, including destroyers and the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the area.
