According to a video posted on Trust TV, on Friday June 26, 2026, Senator Ali Ndume, former Senate leader and senator representing Borno South, revealed during an interview on the Daily Politics program that President Bola Tinubu personally encouraged him to continue speaking freely and critically, telling him during their last meeting that he should keep talking because he only speaks the truth.

The disclosure came near the end of a wide-ranging interview in which Senator Ndume had been consistently candid about what he sees as the failures of the current administration, from the poor welfare of soldiers to corruption in government agencies and the excessive dependence of the president’s inner circle on his personal patronage.

Throughout the interview, the host pressed the senator on whether he would say the same things to the president’s face.

Senator Ndume confirmed without hesitation that he would and that the president is already aware of his views.

He described his relationship with the president as one built on mutual respect, even if access to the president has been limited since 2023. Favor As Higher Power? He said he had only managed to meet the president twice in an official capacity since he took office, the second of which happened after one of the president’s aides saw an interview the senator had granted and brought it to the president’s attention.

In his words, Senator Ndume said, “When we met last, I said, ‘Do you want me to stop talking?’ He said, ‘No. Say it because you only speak the truth.’ And in all my interviews, have you ever heard me abusing the president? I will not ever do that,” he said.

Senator Ndume drew a clear distinction between his criticism of those around the president and any personal attack on the president himself.

He said he consciously separates the office of the President of Nigeria from the individual, Bola Tinubu, and that his comments are always directed at the system and those running it poorly, not at the man at the top.

He said he remains a loyal member of the APC but believes the president needs more independent voices around him who are willing to offer honest counsel without fear of losing access or favour.
