As political parties continue preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general election, political analyst and Arise News Director of News and Politics, Summer Sambo, has commended the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, for swiftly naming his running mate following the party’s convention.
Speaking during a political review programme with Arise News, Sambo said, “Peter Obi actually took a very strong decision by naming his running mate immediately at that convention.” He described the move as a bold step that removed uncertainty and demonstrated strategic planning ahead of the election.
According to Sambo, Obi’s decision to announce Rabiu Musafasau as his vice-presidential candidate immediately after emerging as the NDC flagbearer showed confidence and readiness for the campaign ahead. He noted that the choice leaves no room for speculation and places responsibility on the running mate to help strengthen the party’s appeal, particularly in northern Nigeria.
The analyst observed that the NDC has recently faced internal challenges following its nationwide primaries, with some critics questioning whether the party is truly different from other political organisations. Reports of disputes and controversies surrounding the primaries have generated concerns among party supporters and observers.
Sambo said the NDC must now focus on rebuilding public confidence and addressing issues arising from the primary process. He expressed hope that the party’s National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for June 3 would provide solutions to the concerns raised by members and stakeholders.
