BREAKING: Nigeria Records Fresh COVID-19 Case
According to a report by Daily Trust on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Nigeria has recorded a new case of COVID-19, raising fresh concern among health authorities.
The case was confirmed in Cross River State, marking a return of the virus in the state after a long period without any reported infection. Officials say the situation is under control, but monitoring has been intensified to prevent any possible spread.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Ayuk, disclosed the development during a press briefing in Calabar.
He explained that the patient is a 53-year-old Chinese national working with Lafarge, who arrived in Nigeria on March 17 before falling ill weeks later. According to him, the patient initially received care at a medical facility before his condition worsened.
He said the patient was later transferred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where proper medical procedures were carried out. Samples were taken and tested, and the result confirmed that he had contracted COVID-19. Ayuk added that the patient is currently stable and responding well to treatment, which he described as a positive sign.
The commissioner assured residents that the state is prepared to handle such health situations. He said the government has strengthened its surveillance systems and response mechanisms to detect and manage any outbreak quickly.
While noting that isolated infections may still occur, he stressed that there is no cause for panic.
Also speaking, the State Epidemiologist, Dr Inyang Ekpenyong, said the emergency response team has been activated.
She explained that contact tracing is ongoing to identify those who may have come in contact with the patient, while rapid response teams have been deployed to affected areas.
In her remarks, Dr Yewande Olatunde of the World Health Organization said the virus has not been completely eradicated globally. She urged residents to remain cautious and continue observing preventive measures as authorities work to contain the situation.
