In a recent interview with The Sun on Saturday, April 18, 2026, the presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in the 2023 general elections, Alhaji Sani Yusuf Yabagi, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s rising debt and what he describes as weak accountability in government.

‎He stated that there is growing public worry about how the country’s debts are increasing without clear answers from those in power, according to him, many Nigerians are asking important questions about where public funds are going and who is benefiting from them.

‎Yabagi alleged that the problem is linked to a breakdown in the country’s constitutional order, he said the principles that guide how government should operate are not being properly followed and explained that the three arms of government are meant to work independently to ensure balance and accountability.

‎He specifically pointed to the National Assembly, saying it is not functioning as a fully independent institution, in his view, the legislature is not doing enough to check the actions of the executive arm of government.

‎He argued that this lack of strong oversight has contributed to the rising level of national debt, he said decisions on borrowing are being made without enough questioning or public explanation.

‎Yabagi stated that there is little or no serious debate about how borrowed funds are used and stressed that Nigerians are not being told clearly what the money is spent on, or what benefits it brings to the economy.

‎He described the situation as dangerous for governance and accountability, he said when institutions fail to question the executive, it becomes difficult to protect public interest.

‎”The three arms of government are not working, especially the National Assembly that’s why you have the high unbearable level of debts that you are talking about, and there’s nobody saying anything,” he said.
