BREAKING: “Nigeria Cannot Afford Mixed Signals In A Fight That Demands Discipline And Resolve – Abdullahi
According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, April 19, 2026, the African Democratic Congress, African Democratic Congress, has criticised a reported plan linked to the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reintegrate nearly 800 individuals described as former terrorists into communities across the country.
The party raised concerns over the approach, stating that such a move raises serious questions about national security and the handling of individuals associated with insurgency-related activities.
The statement was issued as part of the party’s reaction to ongoing discussions around security policy and rehabilitation programmes in Nigeria.
The party’s position was made public through a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.
In the statement, the ADC described the reported plan as a reflection of what it sees as weaknesses in the government’s security strategy.
It expressed concern that the approach may suggest a lack of clarity in dealing with individuals previously linked to violent activities.
According to the party, the handling of such cases requires strict procedures that ensure accountability and public safety.
The ADC further argued that describing individuals involved in terrorism-related activities as “brothers” or “prodigal sons,” as mentioned in some official statements in recent weeks, raises concerns about how the issue is being framed.
The party stated that such language could be interpreted as downplaying the seriousness of terrorism.
It maintained that terrorism should be treated as a major security threat that requires firm and structured responses rather than symbolic or emotional descriptions.
The party also raised questions about the absence of clear information regarding the process leading to the proposed reintegration.
It stated that Nigerians have not been provided with details on whether individuals involved were properly investigated or prosecuted before being considered for reintegration.
It further noted that there is limited information on the criteria used to determine eligibility for release, as well as the systems that would be used to monitor such individuals after reintegration into society.
In addition, the ADC expressed concern about the lack of clarity regarding consultation with affected communities.
It stated that there is no clear indication that communities that may receive these individuals have been involved in the decision-making process or given assurances regarding their safety.
The party suggested that without such consultations and safeguards, the process may create uncertainty and tension in vulnerable areas.
It described the situation as one that requires careful handling to avoid further security risks.
The statement also highlighted concerns about accountability and justice for victims of insurgency-related violence.
The party stressed that any reintegration programme should take into account the experiences of those who have suffered from attacks.
It argued that justice mechanisms should be clearly defined to ensure that victims are not overlooked in the process.
According to the ADC, failure to address these issues could weaken public confidence in national security efforts.
The party further stated that the government has not provided sufficient answers to what it described as fundamental questions surrounding the proposed reintegration.
It noted that there is uncertainty about how decisions are being made and whether proper security assessments have been conducted.
The ADC warned that without clear explanations, the initiative may appear unclear in purpose and execution.
It called for more transparency in addressing issues related to national security and rehabilitation policies.
He said, “Nigeria cannot afford mixed signals in a fight that demands discipline and resolve. National security is not a guessing game, and it is not a space for sentiment to override judgment. It requires leadership that understands the stakes and is prepared to act with firmness and clarity.”
