According to a report by Metro on Tuesday May 12, 2026, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola will not be considered for the permanent managerial role at Manchester United, despite earlier links with the Old Trafford job and interest from other Premier League clubs.
The 43-year-old is set to leave Bournemouth at the end of the season once his contract expires. He has impressed in charge of the Cherries, guiding them close to achieving European qualification for the first time in their history, even after losing several key players last summer.
His strong performances have attracted attention from clubs such as Chelsea and Crystal Palace, while Manchester United were also previously linked as they continue evaluating long-term managerial options alongside interim boss Michael Carrick.
However, it is now reported that Iraola is no longer being considered for the permanent position at United. This decision increases the likelihood that Carrick could remain in charge heading into the new season after his successful spell as interim manager.
Speaking recently, Iraola confirmed he is not rushing his future plans and remains focused on finishing the current campaign strongly. He also emphasised that there is clarity at Bournemouth regarding next season’s managerial situation, with Marco Rose expected to take over.
Meanwhile, Carrick has earned strong support within the Manchester United dressing room and has overseen an impressive run of results since taking charge. Under his guidance, the club has secured Champions League qualification and shown improved consistency.
Former United captain Wayne Rooney has also urged the club to make a swift decision on the managerial position. He stressed the importance of clarity for incoming players and highlighted the need for investment in the squad to compete at the highest level.
With Iraola now out of contention, attention appears to be shifting firmly toward confirming Carrick’s future and planning a busy summer transfer window to strengthen the squad ahead of a demanding season.
