According to a report by the Times of Israel on Tuesday June 2nd, 2026, Israeli prosecutors are preparing to file charges against a Hamas operative accused of keeping the remains of an Israeli soldier in Gaza for nearly ten years, according to a joint announcement from the Shin Bet security agency and Israel Police.
The suspect, Ibrahim Hilu, is expected to be indicted later this week in the Beersheba District Court on what authorities described as serious security-related offenses. Officials say Hilu was previously a commander in Hamas’s Shati Battalion before later operating as a shopkeeper in Gaza City.
The case centers on the remains of Staff Sgt. Oron Shaul, who was killed during the 2014 Gaza conflict. Shaul died in the Shejaiya area of Gaza City after the armored personnel carrier he was traveling in came under attack. Following the incident, his body was taken by Hamas fighters and remained in Gaza for years.
Israeli authorities eventually recovered the remains in January 2025 through what they described as a covert operation. Details that later emerged in Israeli media painted a dramatic picture of the mission.
According to reports, investigators alleged that Hilu kept Shaul’s body in a refrigerator located in one of several shops beneath his residence in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood. After gathering intelligence and questioning the suspect, Israeli security agencies reportedly relied on a Palestinian informant to gain access to the location.
The operation culminated in the recovery of the remains, which were then transported to Israeli forces waiting nearby. Reports indicated that the informant removed the body from the site and carried it a considerable distance before reaching the extraction point.
The upcoming indictment marks the latest development in a case that has remained highly significant in Israel for more than a decade, particularly for the family of Oron Shaul and for officials involved in efforts to recover the remains of soldiers missing in conflict.
