Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and others who criticised him over his comments about the opposition coalition owe him a public apology.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Baba-Ahmed said some political figures, including Lawal, sent him harsh text messages because of the views he expressed about the coalition. According to him, many of the predictions he made at the time have since come true, and those who attacked him should publicly acknowledge that.
He said the apology should be so public that they would have to buy newspaper pages to express it.
Baba-Ahmed also suggested that some people wrongly assume that criticism automatically means hatred. He argued that individuals who point out perceived problems are sometimes doing so out of concern rather than hostility.
Reacting specifically to Lawal’s recent criticism of the coalition and its presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Baba-Ahmed described Lawal’s remarks as disappointing.
He further downplayed Lawal’s political influence, saying his comments were unlikely to have a lasting impact because public attention would quickly move on.
Baba-Ahmed added that he was surprised by the tone of some of the messages he received from older political figures, saying he had expected more constructive engagement from them despite their disagreements.
In his words, “BD Lawal was one of those who sent me stinkers by text, I have it here, and even our other leader sent me very bad text because of things that I said that have turned out to be true. They should please rent pages in newspapers and apologize to me.”
