According to Metro Sport on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, Arsenal have abandoned their pursuit of Julián Álvarez after learning the Atletico Madrid striker is only interested in joining FC Barcelona this summer.
Fresh off their first Premier League triumph in 22 years, Arsenal had identified the Argentine forward as a major attacking target, with Mikel Arteta keen to further strengthen his squad ahead of next season.
Paris Saint-Germain F.C. also explored a potential move for the 26-year-old, but Alvarez has reportedly remained focused on securing a transfer to Camp Nou.
Barcelona’s attempts to sign the World Cup winner have already created tension with Atlético Madrid, who are said to be unhappy with the Catalan club’s public approach regarding the player.
Despite the strained relationship, Barcelona are still pushing hard to complete the transfer. Atletico have already turned down an opening €100 million (£86.4m) offer and are unwilling to negotiate easily with their domestic rivals.
Reports claim Atletico even tried to redirect Alvarez toward Arsenal by proposing a deal involving €60m (£51.7m) plus Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres heading to Madrid.
However, Alvarez reportedly rejected the idea immediately, making it clear he had no desire to move to north London.
According to SPORT, Arsenal have now fully withdrawn from the race for the former Manchester City F.C. forward and will instead focus on other attacking targets.
After months of speculation, Alvarez finally addressed his future publicly following Argentina’s 2-0 World Cup victory over Austria.
“I spoke with the people I needed to speak with and the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream,” he said.
With Alvarez no longer considered a realistic option, Arsenal are now monitoring other forwards, including Bournemouth youngster Junior Kroupi.
The French attacker impressed during his breakthrough Premier League season after arriving from FC Lorient in a £10m move, scoring 13 goals and emerging as one of the league’s brightest young talents.
However, Arsenal face fierce competition for his signature, with Chelsea, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and FC Bayern Munich all keeping close tabs on the forward.
Bournemouth are reportedly expected to demand around €100m (£86m) before considering any sale.
As Arsenal continue searching for more attacking quality, the club appear ready to move beyond Alvarez and focus on more achievable targets during a crucial summer transfer window.
