Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said he still maintains a strong relationship with Peter Obi despite recent political developments involving the opposition coalition.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Baba-Ahmed described Obi as someone he continues to respect and referred to him as his boss. He said their relationship remains cordial and expressed hope that they could work together again in the near future.
However, rather than focusing on individuals, Baba-Ahmed turned attention to what he described as the larger issues affecting opposition politics in Nigeria. He questioned whether many politicians who are often labelled as opposition figures are genuinely challenging the government or are mainly interested in securing political offices.
According to him, a true opposition should consistently hold the government accountable for its actions and policies, rather than becoming active only during election periods or when political positions are at stake.
Baba-Ahmed also argued that key opposition figures, including Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, should have sustained the momentum of political engagement that followed the 2023 general election. He maintained that stronger and more consistent pressure on issues such as constitutional breaches could have limited what he described as poor governance.
He further suggested that continued opposition activism might have helped address some of the security challenges and abductions that have troubled the country in recent years.
In his words, “Are you forgetting Peter Obi was boss, he’s still my boss, we still have good relationships and I hope we can somehow work together, in the very near future.”
