As per a report on Channel 4 News, on Saturday, June 6, 2026, Professor Sadegh Zibakalam delivered one of his most straightforward remarks during the interview, claiming that the Islamic Republic could not be overthrown by force, whether from outside or via internal rebellion, since a significant portion of the Iranian populace remained truly dedicated to the regime and ready to protect it.

This statement was part of a wider conversation about the viable options for political change in Iran and the constructive role that the West, particularly the United States, might undertake.

Zibakalam clearly positioned himself against proponents of regime change, whether through military intervention, sanctions, or backing opposition groups abroad.

In his words, Sadegh Zibakalam stated, “I think that the only route available to us is gradual reform, not the downfall of the Islamic regime.

Because we can simply not bring down the Islamic regime — as there are many individuals willing to sacrifice their lives for it. I do not wish to witness the end of the Islamic regime since I believe that the only route available to us is gradual reform,” he continued.

Zibakalam made his stance distinct from that of the Iranian opposition in exile, saying that those groups were eagerly anticipating war, believing it would lead to the government’s collapse.

He specifically mentioned Iran International and individuals like Reza Pahlavi as part of those he thought were advocating for this strategy, and he showed strong disapproval of their methods.

He reasoned that each time Iran had sought rapid political change in its recent history, it resulted in setbacks instead of advancements.
