BREAKING: Iranian Official Says Over 12,000 Of 60,500 War-damaged Residential Buildings Restored

As reported by CNN on Monday, May 4, 2026, the Iranian government has reached a significant milestone in its post-war recovery efforts, announcing that more than 12,000 residential buildings damaged during the recent conflict have been successfully restored.

This update, provided by Brigadier General Mohammad Zahraei, head of the Basij Construction Organization, highlights the scale of domestic reconstruction following months of military escalation involving the United States and Israel.

While the restoration of these homes represents progress, it covers only a fraction of the total devastation, as official figures now confirm that approximately 60,500 housing units across the country sustained varying degrees of damage.

The geographical distribution of the destruction illustrates the intensity of the strikes on Iran’s urban centers.

Tehran bore the heaviest burden, with roughly 46,000 residential units affected by the conflict. Other major cities also suffered significant losses, including Isfahan with 12,300 damaged homes and Qom with 2,200.

The restoration strategy has relied heavily on a grassroots approach, with General Zahraei noting that the 12,000 completed repairs were achieved through the active participation of volunteer groups and specialized reconstruction teams.

This mobilization of civil society has been crucial, especially as the government faces a total estimated roadmap of over 118,000 private sector units requiring some form of intervention.

Despite the positive announcement, the road to full recovery remains long and complex.

Government spokespeople have indicated that while many units suffered only minor damage, thousands of others require complete reconstruction, a process that could take anywhere from six months to two years to finalize.

For many displaced families currently living in temporary housing, the speed of these repairs is a matter of urgent survival.

As Iranian authorities continue to assess the wider economic impact of the war, the success of the Basij-led volunteer efforts serves as a vital first step in stabilizing the nation’s housing crisis and returning citizens to their communities.
