According to a report by DAILY POST on Sunday 28th June 2026; Several members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have reportedly lost their lives after rival commanders exchanged gunfire following a disagreement over a planned attack in the Timbuktu Triangle.
Counter-terrorism expert Zagazola Makama disclosed the incident in a post on X, revealing that the confrontation stemmed from a dispute among senior field commanders over the execution of an operation scheduled for the previous night.
According to the report, a commander identified as Abu Ali declined to allow fighters under his command to participate in the planned assault; His decision allegedly provoked another senior commander, who accused him of deliberately undermining the mission and questioned his loyalty to the insurgent group. Sources indicated that the violent confrontation was the result of long-standing internal tensions rather than an isolated disagreement; The group has reportedly been grappling with disputes over operational strategies, dwindling resources, logistics, and competition for influence among its commanders.
The failed operation is said to have exposed deeper divisions within the insurgent ranks, with rival leaders increasingly battling for control of manpower and supplies.
