Ketevan Gorjestani, International Affairs Editor at France 24, has revealed that during the first two days of a Gulf blockade, Iranian-affiliated ships encountered by the US Navy complied fully with instructions and retreated without any form of resistance.

During an appearance on France 24, she cited a CENTCOM briefing issued roughly 36 hours into the operation stating that at least six vessels linked to Iranian ports had been intercepted through communication and subsequently turned back. She also referenced additional reporting from The Wall Street Journal, which suggested that the total number of vessels involved may have reached eight within 48 hours.

According to her, the US Navy achieved a notable level of deterrence, with all contacted vessels choosing to withdraw immediately after being warned, avoiding any physical engagement or confrontation.

She also highlighted the case of the Rich Starry, a Chinese-flagged tanker that had already passed through the Strait of Hormuz but later reversed course, an incident that attracted global attention due to China’s commercial ties with Iran.

Gorjestani explained that this outcome was largely influenced by the extensive US naval presence in the region, which includes thousands of personnel, a fleet of warships, and other military resources. She noted that instead of positioning inside the narrow strait, US forces are stationed at its entrance in the Gulf of Oman, a strategic placement that enhances control while limiting vulnerability.

Despite the calm so far, she cautioned that key uncertainties remain. She questioned what would happen if a ship refused to obey future orders, emphasizing that physically intercepting or boarding vessels could significantly escalate tensions, and noting that no publicly known procedure has been established for such an eventuality.
