According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, May 29, 2026, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that the establishment of state police in Nigeria is long overdue, insisting that the initiative has become necessary to address the growing security challenges confronting the country.

The governor stated that the creation of state police would significantly contribute to reducing insecurity and strengthening law enforcement at the grassroots level.

Makinde made the declaration while speaking during the state primary elections of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Thursday.

The governor used the occasion to renew calls for the federal government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu to urgently take steps toward the implementation of state police across the federation.

According to the governor, the current security structure requires urgent reforms that will enable states to participate more actively in protecting lives and property within their territories.

He stressed that state police would improve coordination between local authorities and security agencies, thereby making crime prevention and response more effective.

Makinde further explained that the creation of state police would help strengthen the country’s security architecture and curb rising criminal activities in different parts of Nigeria.

He maintained that governors and local authorities are closer to the people and better positioned to understand the peculiar security challenges facing their various communities.

He said, “The establishment of state police would improve local intelligence gathering and enhance the capacity of states to respond swiftly and adequately to security threats within their domains.”
