Nigerian political activist Zekeri Idris recently discussed the country’s economic woes, the growing expense of living, and the growing chasm between the country’s elite and the general public in an interview broadcast on News Central TV.

“The average Nigerian cannot afford eggs, but these men are already eating chicken,” Idris said during the interview. He made the statement to draw attention to the gap, in his view, between the political class and the everyday Nigerians’ experience of rising food and inflation costs.

He made reference to well-known politicians like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, but he insisted that real people’s struggles with basic affordability, rather than theoretical considerations, should drive political debates.

According to Idris, many Nigerian families are finding it harder and harder to afford even the most basic food items, such as eggs and protein sources, because of the country’s present economic crisis. The emphasis on elite competitiveness and electoral positioning, in his opinion, prevents political discussions from reflecting these facts enough.

In addition to measurable political success, he maintained that leadership should be held to account by actual, everyday changes in the lives of the people. Economic policies, in his opinion, can only make a difference if they put food security, income stability, and cost-of-living relief at the forefront.

The political activist summed up by calling on political leaders to shift the conversation back to economic welfare, saying that the capacity of a government to make sure its inhabitants can afford food, shelter, and transportation is a true measure of its legitimacy.
